The Scientist.
this song is truly beautiful for a number of reasons. impo anyways.
for one, the clash of a scientist and something as non-mathematical as love being contrasted on several platforms is just brilliant. just to name a few, the music, connection of sentances, and of course, the contents of the actual lyrics... (i think)
i guess nobody knows who the scientist is, singer or recipient, nor does anyone know for sure whose side chris martin is on (arts vs science). the puzzles, questions of science etc could refer to the occupation of a scientist, it could also refer to the quandary of treating love as a scientific equation. my guess is that what is important is thatthere is(/was) a conflict (in the form of regret), either within the singer, from singer to reciepient, or a mixture of both scenarios.
i would post lyrics, but as everybody knows, noone ever reads them. you can get it off the net anyways.
but if there is one line i cld highlight (which would be totally unrelated to the above paras, but is the main purpose of this post) it'd be the one repeated in different ways at the end of the verses and choruses. cuz sometimes, its not about giving up, we just need to take things from the beginning, and take it back to basics.

let's go back to the start.
